The Design Director is responsible for planning and managing the activities of the Design Team by establishing high standards for design, creativity and customer satisfaction. Serve as the communication link between design, sales and implementation team members. Foster the design team climate and expectations to differentiate Catalyst's product and service offerings and overall brand by providing design solutions that are creative, precise and of lasting value. Works with employees to establish goals and objectives, and holds them accountable for achieving these goals. Supports sales management teams in securing new business, satisfying existing clients, and meeting yearly sales goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides direction and leadership to the Design Team. Establishes and communicates goals and objectives for the team that are in line with the corporate direction.
  • Clarifies the vision by explaining how it will impact team and individual success; works collaboratively with team to brainstorm action plans to implement the vision; sets objectives to put vision into action through policies and procedures.
  • Assures maximum staff productivity through prioritizing and coordinating employee schedules and workloads.
  • Ensures development of a top performing design department through career planning, training, performance feedback and coaching of staff.
  • Makes decisions around hiring and terminations; recruits and hires the best designers; creates a catered onboarding schedule for new hires.
  • Ensures design standards are being followed.
  • Assure technology integration and innovation, including successful transition to CET and other design technology programs.
  • Manage design serves profitability, including allocations; develop and maintain design budget.
  • Checks work progress to redirect activity and resources to meet project goals and time frames.
  • Understands sales projections; consults management team for feedback on best deployment of design resources.
  • Interfaces with sales to ensure design services are communicated during initial sales meetings.
  • Manages outsourced design contracts.
  • Facilitates continuous quality improvement of design processes and procedures.
  • Increases visibility within the design community.

Education and Experience

  • BFA, BA or BS in Interior Design/Architecture Planning from an accredited college or university
  • 5+ years of design experience in contract furniture, architecture or interior design firm, working with cross functional teams to drive both product and other design efforts.
  • 3+ years of managing individuals in product design and application; experience in managing remote and diverse teams is preferred.
  • Technical experience with CET, AutoCad, rendering software and MS Office.
